Hi everyone, it’s Dr. Mike and it’s 2011!

I hope you had a great Holiday break and are looking forward to having an extremely positive 2011.

This latest video blog below is regarding The Ohio State Buckeyes and what is being referred to as “Tattoo Gate.” There were some pretty interesting facts that were brought out and decisions made. Watch below to see how I weighed in on this situation.

See if you agree or disagree with my take on things… Leave your comments below!!

Happy New Year,

Only point I think you missed is that having the players pledge to returning next year gives Coach Tressel one more year to influence their growth from boys to men.

I know how much you are a Buckeye fan. So I am not disappointed that you were responsible to post a video blog on the subject. There are so many points but you covered them well.

Dr. Mike, there is a lot to review here as you said. While we all know that hopefully as we get older we make fewer bad choices, the best feeling as you get older is knowing leaders that have entered your life during these times and took the time to make a difference. So, I hope Tressel has been effective for them and that they do learn from these mistakes to help them make better decisions later in life. I think he will and does play that role. As for the ‘integrity of the game’ as stated by the Sugar Bowl leadership, I am offended that they used the word integrity. By making that statement, they are saying that they have to play them to ‘do what they have stated they will do’ and put a good game on the field. That is leadership saying the game is more important than the lesson to be learned by all that hold sports high. They should be out of the Sugar Bowl and in next year. The actions were a few years old and the consequences should be soon,(Sugar Bowl)and then let them get on with growing up. Tressel should be the one in control of the accountability for next year and not the NCAA.

I am appalled but not surprised at the mother’s comments (her son did not do anything anyone else would not have done), but not surprised. As a mother of 4 I am constantly disappointed and disturbed at the way parents i know handle issues like this. Holding our kids accountable for their bad choices is key to helping them grow into responsible citizens…it is also one of the hardest jobs a parent has. I commend those parents who are doing the tough work! I also think the coach made a wise move. Too often I have seen coaches try to keep things quiet in order not to make the team, school or coach look bad. These boys made some bad choices. They need to take the punishment that is handed out and if the coach wants to add a little ‘personal integrity’ check I am with him.

I feel a five game suspension is a little much. When you look at the SEC and what some of their players have done and what punishment they were handed, I just think a 5 game suspension is
ridiculous and I think they should have explained how they reached that number. A better solution would have been no Sugar Bowl, but we all knew that wouldn’t happen because of the economic impact. A one or two game suspension is much more reasonable. I do not agree with Coach Tressel trying to get a “promise” they will return. I think it makes him appear desperate to hang onto
    these guys for another year.

  6. Hugh says:

My concern with the whole thing of letting them play and travel with the team is the fact that is Coach Tressel just making it easier on himself by not having to take action on the situation and then later saying how the players did not hold up to their end of the bargain. We as adults need to teach at the time and not allow those we are teaching to see us wiggle out of our responsibility.
